In 2019, the City of Des Moines proposed a one percent local option tax to its citizens. Half the generated revenue from the LOT would be used for property tax relief. The second half would be used for city infrastructure projects. It passed with 70% approval and generates $37 million annually for the city. Because of local option funding, property taxes are at their lowest rate since 22.
